General information:

The right amount of protein is important in our diets, for growth and reproduction.
Protein is present in the blood. Healthy kidneys only need to filter small amounts (traces) in the urine because most protein molecules are too large for the filters (glomeruli). It is not common to pass protein in your urine. When this happens it is known as "Proteinuria".  Most common risk factors for proteinuria are:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Diabetes and high blood pressure can cause kidney damage, leading to proteinuria
