General information:

The erythrocytes of different individuals are divided into one of four groups depending on the presence of A or B antigens: A, B, O or AB. The ABO system and RhD antigens are extremely important in blood transfusions and for hemolytic disease of the newborn in ABO and/or RhD incompatibility between mother and fetus.

The method used is based on the principle of agglutination. Normal human erythrocytes agglutinate in the presence of antibodies directly directed against an antigen contained in the erythrocyte membrane. A-antigen-bearing erythrocytes are examined for subgroups A1 and A2.
