What is the microbiome?
The intestinal microflora is the totality of all microorganisms inhabiting the colon. It is essential for human health.
The microbiome contains approximately 30 times more genes than the human genome (Shreiner A. et al., 2015). Therefore, it is not surprising that due to its enormous metabolic potential, the bacterial mass of the gut, which can weigh up to 1.5 kg, is considered a separate organ, the MICROBIOME.
Bacteria are vital to the body being directly or indirectly involved in various physiological processes. They prevent the colonization of the Gastrointestinal tract(GIT) by pathogenic microorganisms ( salmonella, shigella, fungi , clostridia ), are involved in the metabolism of nutrients and synthesis of vitamins. Disturbed microbiome plays a significant role in patients with impaired peristalsis, chronic diarrhea, chronic constipation and other motility disorders. According to many studies, the gut microbiome has a powerful immunostimulatory and immunomodulatory role.
What does the Laborexpress microbiome include ?
- Bacteroides genus with more prominent representatives such as Bacteroides fragilis, B. caccae, B. intestinalis, B. ovatus, B. vulgatus ( presented as a total, not individually)
- the group of bacteria of the genus Eubacterium rectale with representatives of Eubacterium rectale, E. hallii ( presented as a total number, not separately)
- genus Bifidobacterium with more prominent representatives such as Bifidobacterium adolescens, B. bifidum, B. infantis ( presented as a collective number, not individually)
- Roseburia hominis, R. intestinalis, R. faecis
- Akkermansia muciniphila
- Faecalibacterium prausnitzii
- Genus Prevotella
- genus Ruminococcus with representatives of families Ruminococcaceae and Lachnospiraceae
Why exactly are these bacterial species included in the Laborexpress microbiome ?
The genus Prevotella are bacteria representative of the oral, vaginal and intestinal microflora. Studies in patients prove that diet plays a key role in the amount of these bacteria. Patients with a predominantly Western diet, rich in animal protein and fat, have a small amount of Prevotella. This genus is found in greater quantity in people on a plant and carbohydrate diet. However, overgrowth of this genus may be a risk factor for various diseases related to bone metabolism.
Ruminococci are a large number of microorganisms with representatives of two families : Ruminococcaceae and Lachnospiraceae. Ruminococcaceae in the intestinal microbiome play an important function in the digestion of starch and complex carbohydrates as well as fiber-rich foods such as lentils, beans, and whole-grain fibers. Most representatives are important for digestive function. Slower breakdown of these foods by Ruminococci is associated with many health effects: reduced risk of infectious diarrhea, reduced risk of diabetes and rectal cancer. However, changes in the amount of certain members of the Ruminococcus genus are a factor in severe cases of irritable bowel syndrome.

Members of the Lachnospiraceae family include over 24 genera such as Ruminococcus, Blautia, Dorea and Lachnoanaerobaculum. They are strictly anaerobic microorganisms, and their presence is a protective factor for Clostridoides difficile infections and obesity. They are also producers of short-chain fatty acids.
