General information
We offer PCR diagnostics for respiratory pathogens throughout the year.
Chlamydophila pneumoniae is a common cause of respiratory disease and accounts for 10 to 20% of community-acquired pneumonia cases. Recent seroepidemiological studies have linked infection with C. pneumoniae with atherosclerosis, asthma and acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Infection often manifests as a mild, self-limiting illness, but outbreaks of C pneumoniae infection have been reported in families, schools, military barracks, and small communities. Most people contract primary C pneumoniae infection between the ages of five and 14. The clinical picture of respiratory illness caused by C pneumoniae is often indistinguishable from that of viral or mycoplasma etiology. Because curative antimicrobial therapy is available for C pneumoniae infection, a specific laboratory diagnosis may be helpful in patient management.
If necessary, SMDL Laborexpress has antibodies against the causative organism.
