These are the causes of localized inflammation of the organs in the urogenital system. Mycoplasmas are found in 20-40% of sexually active healthy men and women without causing complaints. Very often, the infection can accompany other bacterial and viral sexually transmitted infections. The main mode of transmission is sexual (genital or oral contact). The incubation period after infection is 3-5 weeks, on average 15-20 days the first symptoms appear. In men, urethritis is most often found, manifested by burning and pain when urinating or a clear scanty discharge from the urethra. Complications are most often prostatitis, prostato-vesiculitis, epididymitis and epididymo-orchitis. Such an infection can lead to reduced sperm motility and sterility. The frequency of causative agents is 10-15% for U.urealyticum and 10-20% for Mycoplasma.
In women, the infection is most often caused by Mycoplasma hominis. The main manifestations are inflammation of Bartholin's glands, participation in the process of bacterial vaginosis, salpingitis and sterility.
In women with mycoplasma infection, inflammation of the urinary canal, bladder, pelvic floor and fetal membranes can also be observed in case of possible pregnancy. Often mycoplasma and ureaplasma bacteria can complicate the course of pregnancy and lead to premature birth.
With complaints related to pain or difficulty urinating and lack of bacterial growth from the urine, the possibility of developing a mycoplasma infection should always be considered. U.urealyticum is believed to be involved in the pathogenesis of kidney stone disease, due to its high urease activity, while M.hominis is believed to be the causative agent of acute pyelonephritis.
