Calprotectin in stool(quantitative)
General Information:
Faecal calprotectin is a non-invasive marker for monitoring intestinal inflammation. The test is easy and accessible.
Calprotectin accounts for 60% of proteins in white blood cells (neutrophils), it is also found in monocytes, epithelial cells and other shaped elements. It is removed from the cells during cell activation or cell death. It belongs to the family of calcium-binding proteins.
During a bacterial invasion, calprotectin is secreted outside the epithelial cells, is not degraded by their enzymes, has a regulatory role in the inflammatory process. This role is due to its zinc-binding properties, suppressing many zinc-dependent enzymes. This ability assists in the destruction of extracellular and intracellular bacteria.
The study of calprotectin is widely used in intestinal inflammation, particularly the small intestine. In faeces it is stable, it is not destroyed by the microorganisms to 7 days at room temperature.
This is an accessible and sensitive marker for the study of the degree of intestinal inflammation in infectious enteritis, treatment follow-up in patients with Crohn's disease, Chronic ulcerative colitis, colon irritable, diverticulitis. Its values may also increase in some tumour diseases: colorectal carcinoma and adenoma.
