General information:

The yo-antibody is associated with paraneoplastic degeneration of the brain (PCD), a disorder primarily affecting the Purkinje cells of the brain. Although other neurological symptoms may occur, these are the cerebral symptoms of slurred speech, incoordination and nystagmus (spontaneous jerks eye movement) that are most impressive. Most patients with PCD associated with anti-Yo have gynecological (usually ovarian) or breast cancer as the underlying cause. In these patients, tumors are often infiltrated with lymphocytes, suggesting an immune response. Tumor cells in PCD patients associated with anti-Yo express the antigen (most ovarian tumors not associated with PCD do not express the Yo antigen).
