Anti-striated muscle - Ab
General information:
Anti-striated muscle autoantibodies are tested when myasthenia gravis is suspected and especially in patients who have thymoma. May be mildly positive in chronic muscle diseases such as polymyositis, muscular dystrophy and fibromyalgia.
Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by muscle weakness and easy fatigue after physical activity, a consequence of impaired neuromuscular transmission in the transverse striated muscles. The reason for this disorder is due to a reduced number of nicotinic receptors in the postsynaptic membrane of the neuromuscular synapse, a consequence of the antibodies formed against them.
