General information:
Antimitochondrial antibodies are specific antibodies produced in the body to the components of its own cells (mitochondria). Antimitochondrial antibodies (AMA) are found in more than 90% of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. Biliary cirrhosis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and then hardening of the bile ducts in the liver, leading to disruption of the structure and function of the liver and bile flow. The test is used to diagnose this for a disease.
