General information:

Thyroglobulin is also found in the serum of healthy people, not only in the follicles of the thyroid gland. Factors that suppress or stimulate thyroid function have a similar effect on thyroglobulin synthesis and secretion. Conditions occurring with abnormally low values are: total ablation (removal) of the thyroid gland (17-35 days after surgery), congenital aplasia of the gland or congenital defects in thyroid hormone synthesis, including thyroglobulin itself, and also with suppressive treatment with thyroid hormones. Because the serum thyroglobulin concentration in the umbilical vein of full-term euthyroid children is too high, the finding of low values (mostly undetectable) at birth is considered an important indicator of congenital hypothyroidism and can be used as a screening test.
