General information:

Testosterone levels that are related to proteins (albumin and sex hormone binding globulin - SHBG) are measured plus testosterone levels that are not protein bound (free testosterone).
Testosterone is responsible for the development of secondary sexual signs during puberty and sexual function in men - it affects:

  • the activity of the brain and the cardiovascular system;
  • the development of bones and muscles;
  • hair of the body;
  • voice grinding;
  • the distribution of fat tissue;
  • development of sexual organs;
  • helps to supply the body with energy;

Testosterone formation is stimulated and controlled by luteinizing hormone (LH), which is produced by the pituitary gland (pituitary), on the principle of negative feedback - when testosterone levels are high, the production of luteinizing hormone decreases.
