Renin is an enzyme with an amino acid structure. It is part of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, which has a leading role in the regulation of blood pressure and extracellular fluid volume in the body. Renin is secreted by specialized granule cells of the juxtaglomerular apparatus of the kidney.
