Parathyroid hormone, PTH
General Information:
In the parathyroid hormone (PTH) study, the level of this hormone in the blood is measured.
Parathyroid hormone or parathormone (PTH, PTH) is a polypeptide that is secreted by the parathyroid glands (parathyroid glands). It consists of 84 amino acids. Only full-fledged (1-84 PTH) is active. Inactive is the "truncated" 7-84 PTH. Parathyroid has an impact on calcium-phosphorous exchange in the body as well as on bone remodelling.
Higher calcium states in 90% of cases are due to increased secretion of PTH - primary hyperparathyroidism, in other cases, may be due to malignant diseases with bone metastases, sarcoidosis, vitamin D intoxication, overdoses Vit.A, hyperthyroidism, Addison's disease, immobilization, etc.
Conditions with decreased calcium may be due to decreased secretion of PTH - hypoparathyroidism or other illness: Vit.D deficiency, CKD, hepatic cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, acute pancreatitis, some drugs, postoperative removal status, etc.
