General information:
Somatomedin C is called insulin-like because of its ability to stimulate glucose uptake by muscles (similar to insulin). One of the most important effects of IGF–1 is the stimulation of bone growth in length. Circulating IGF–1 increases insulin sensitivity, stimulates glycolysis and cellular glucose uptake. Reduced IGF-1 levels are associated with insulin resistance (risk of carbohydrate metabolism disorders and type 2 diabetes).
