General information:

The thyroid accumulates iodine, producing the hormones T3 (triiodothyronine), T4 (thyroxine), rT3 (inverted triiodothyronine) and calcitonin.
T4 is a pre-homolog of T3, which means that there is a need for processing before turning into T3.
rT3 is formed in T4 processing but is inactive.
Calcitonin reduces calcium levels in the blood.
Thyroid hormone testing is blood, monitoring the levels of free T3 and T4 (FT3 and FT4) fractions. This is part of the total amount of hormones that is active and not associated with carrier proteins.
