General information: 

T3 is an active thyroid hormone. It can be measured by testing total T3 in serum and free T3. Total T3 represents the total amount of T3 in serum (blood), and free T3 represents the amount of T3 available to be used for binding.

T3 acts directly on the nucleus of the cells via a nuclear receptor, literally incorporating your genes and making them change genetic transcription.

Thyroid hormones circulate in the blood in two forms: connected and free. The free fractions of T3 and T4 are a minimal fraction (less than 0.4%) of the total concentration. In the bound fractions, T3 and T4 are linked to carrier proteins. This prevents the elimination of both hormones via the kidneys and the liver and provides the necessary depot, which is in reversible equilibrium with the free fractions to provide the necessary amounts of active hormones for the metabolic needs under certain conditions
