General information:

Provides information on FSH levels.
In the ovaries, FSH, together with LH, stimulate the growth and maturation of the follicle and hence the biosynthesis of oestrogens in the follicles. FSH levels peak in the middle of the cycle, although they have lower values than LH levels over the same period.

In the testicles, FSH stimulates Sertoli cells, respectively. spermatogenesis and androgen production, the binding protein. Male and female LH and FSH levels are low and in relatively constant amounts, their concentrations increase sharply if the testicular function is discontinued, e.g. after orchiectomy.

Determination of FSH concentration is recommended to elucidate dysfunction related to the hypothalamic-pituitary-gland (egg/testicle) axis. Determination of the FSH concentration, together with the determination of the LH concentration, is advisable to be performed with the following indications: congenital diseases accompanied by hormonal disorders; polycystic ovaries; amenorrhoea; menopause; in men with azoospermia.
