General information:
Cortisol is a steroid hormone glucocorticoid that is synthesized in the adrenal cortex. Glucocorticoid secretion (cortisol) is stimulated by the pituitary hormone ACTH. Cortisol is also known as the stress hormone, as its values increase in a state of stress.
Investigation of cortisol is necessary to clarify the conditions of hyper- and cholecocorticism or to identify more frequent, discrete disturbances in the "rhythm" of cortisol secretion.
