Transferrin
General Information:
Transferrin is a transport protein for iron in the blood. It is synthesized in the liver. The amount of transferrin in the blood depends on the function of the liver and the human nutritional status. Under normal conditions, its binding sites are typically one-third saturated with iron, and two-thirds of its capacity remains in reserve.
The amount of transferrin reflects total (total) iron-binding capacity (TIBC).
- TIBC measures the total iron that can bind transferrin in the blood and indirectly gives an indication of the amount of Tf.
- The free JSI (UIBC) determines the spare transfer capacity, ie. the portion that is not saturated with iron. UIBC = TIBC - the concentration of serum iron
- The transferrin can also be measured directly as a protein.
- The transferrin, TIBC and UIBC studies provide an opportunity to assess the ability of blood to bind and transport iron and reflect the iron depots.
