Ferritin
General information:
Ferritin is a basic form of storage of back-up iron in the body. In this way, the highly toxic iron is isolated from the cell contents until it is used. Although ferritin is found in tissues, a small fraction of it can be found in plasma where its concentration is proportional to tissue concentration. Measurement of the serum ferritin level directly indicates the amount of back-up iron. A decrease in its level occurs in latent iron deficiency.
Ferritin is also an acute-phase protein that increases in acute inflammation, with the increase occurring within 1-2 days of the onset of the acute process and peaking between day 3-5. It is recommended to the package of tests for pneumonia, bacterial and viral inflammations, including in patients with Covid-19.
