Blood collection (Venepuncture)
General information
Venepuncture (Blood Collection)
Venepuncture is a quick and routine procedure used to collect a blood sample from a vein, most commonly from the arm. The procedure is performed by trained medical professionals and provides the necessary material for laboratory testing.
What the procedure involves
-
The patient is comfortably seated and the arm is positioned for support.
-
The skin is cleaned with a disinfectant.
-
A sterile needle is inserted into a vein, and the required amount of blood is collected.
-
After the needle is removed, gentle pressure is applied to the site to prevent bruising.
The entire process takes only a few minutes and is generally well tolerated.
Why venepuncture is performed
Blood samples are used for a wide range of laboratory tests, including:
-
complete blood count
-
biochemical analysis
-
hormone testing
-
immunological and serological tests
-
coagulation studies
Patient preparation
Some tests may require:
-
fasting for 8–12 hours
-
avoiding heavy meals or alcohol the day before
-
drinking water to ensure easier vein access
Specific instructions may vary depending on the test.
