D-dimer
General information:
The D-dimer (DD - dimers between the 2 D fragments) is one of the fibrinolysis endpoints produced by the degradation of fibrin stabilized by Factor XIII-fibrin (i-insoluble-insoluble). It is the smallest crosslinked fibrin-degradation product.
The appearance of D-dimers in plasma is an indication of the presence of fibrin in the blood degraded to fibrin fragments as a result of secondary fibrinolysis. Elevated values can not serve to elucidate the cause of fibrin formation, as well as to localize the process.
Sample required:
Venous blood in the morning in fasting
