General information:

Urea is an important end product of protein metabolism. Synthesis of urea occurs only in the liver from CO2 (carbon dioxide) and NH3 (ammonia). Unlike ammonia, urea is not toxic. It dissolves well in water, passes through all the membranes that are permeable to water, and therefore it is distributed evenly in the tissues of the body. Most of the urea formed is excreted through the kidney, small amounts are emitted through the gastrointestinal tract and the skin.

In a number of cases, urea may be elevated above or below the normal range and the study may provide valuable information on the condition of the organism.
