General Information:

Acute or chronic mercury intoxication affects the kidneys, the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract. The symptomatic triad of mercury intoxication is as follows: joint dysfunctions, muscular disorders, and narrowing of the field of vision. Chronic exposure to metallic and inorganic forms of mercury causes nervousness, tremor and irritation of mucous membranes. Intoxication with inorganic mercury is mainly associated with peripheral effects: gastroenteritis and tubular nephritis, while exposure to organic compounds primarily affects the central nervous system, with the possibility of severe and irreversible damage. Chronic intoxication with inorganic mercury is a professional disease that primarily affects miners and foundry workers. The most common non-industrial source of mercury poisoning is the consumption of fish contaminated with methylmercury.
