Cholesterol, HDL
General Information:
HDL-cholesterol has many names - (α-cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, "good cholesterol"). The function of a significant part of this lipoprotein fraction is the extraction of cholesterol from the tissues and its transfer to the liver, where part of it is processed into bile acids.
At low HDL-cholesterol levels, lipid metabolism in serum is impaired. Cholesterol is extracted from tissues and transferred to the liver.
It is assumed that the risk of early ischemic heart disease (a negative risk marker) is reduced in HDL-cholesterol levels within the reference range due to cholesterol recovery from tissues.
