General Information:

Calcium is a mineral which is important for healthy functioning of the heart, muscles and nervous system as well as proper bone formation. The body will pull calcium from the bones to maintain blood levels when a person is not ingesting enough calcium or has a disorder which prevents proper absorption.

Ionized calcium is the active form of calcium. The test shows how much calcium is used in the body. Ionized calcium is needed to maintain blood clothing, nerve function, muscles. 

The concentration of ionized calcium in the blood increases with excess vitamin D, malignant tumors and endocrine diseases.

The concentration of ionized calcium in the blood decreases in acute pancreatitis, thyroid operations.
