Alkaline phosphatase
General information:
Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme (hydrolase) that catalyzes the hydrolysis of various phosphate esters with pH-optimum in the alkaline region.
It is found in almost all organs, in a relatively higher concentration in intestinal epithelial cells, in proximal renal tubules, bones (in osteoblasts - cells involved in bone formation), bile capillaries, liver, placenta, spleen and leukocytes.
Elevated serum alkaline phosphatase values are important for the diagnosis of bone and liver disease. Particularly high are jaundice due to occlusion of bile ducts from various disease processes (so called mechanical jaundice).
Sample required:
Venous blood in the morning in fasting
