General information:

Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme (hydrolase) that catalyzes the hydrolysis of various phosphate esters with pH-optimum in the alkaline region.

It is found in almost all organs, in a relatively higher concentration in intestinal epithelial cells, in proximal renal tubules, bones (in osteoblasts - cells involved in bone formation), bile capillaries, liver, placenta, spleen and leukocytes.
Elevated serum alkaline phosphatase values ​​are important for the diagnosis of bone and liver disease. Particularly high are jaundice due to occlusion of bile ducts from various disease processes (so called mechanical jaundice).
