Eosinophil Cationic Protein, ECP
General information:
Also known as ribonuclease. ECP is a protein localized in eosinophils and released during their degranulation. It is associated with inflammation and asthma, in which its levels increase and can be used in assessing the severity of the process.
The test can also be used in patients with atopic dermatitis where its values correlate with clinical manifestations (erythema, papules, pruritus, excoriations, insomnia and lichenification).
Its levels and interpretation in children need to be refined.
ESR can also be elevated in parasitic diseases.
