Biopsy for histology
General information:
In most cases, a biopsy or surgery is required to take cells or tissues for observation under a microscope. Biopsy (tissue/cell sampling) can be done in different ways:
- Through a special needle, tissue or liquid is drawn
- An endoscope (a thin, specially glowing tube) examines areas in the body (such as stomach) and takes cells or tissu
- By surgery, part or all of the tumor is removed, along with adjacent tissuе
The tissue taken during a biopsy is sent to a pathological laboratory, where it is processed by special methods and cut into thin slices for observation under a microscope. The so-called histological examination (from histos – tissue) is performed. The pathological physician may also perform a cytological (cellular) examination, as material may be taken from urine, cerebrospinal, lung, peritoneal or pleural fluid, vaginal smirv or fluid collected during the biopsy/surgery.
