General information

Acute Viral Hepatitis – Diagnostic Panel

What are acute viral hepatitis infections?

Acute viral hepatitis refers to infections that affect the liver and can lead to inflammation, liver cell damage, and a variety of symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, and yellowing of the skin and eyes. Early diagnosis is essential for proper treatment and prevention of complications.

This diagnostic panel includes the most important markers for detecting acute or recent viral infections.

What does the panel include?

Hepatitis A – Anti-HAV IgM

A marker for acute hepatitis A infection. A positive result indicates recent exposure. Recommended in cases of nausea, fatigue, abdominal pain, or jaundice.

Hepatitis B – Anti-HBc IgM

A key indicator of acute or active hepatitis B infection. Helps distinguish between recent infection and chronic disease. Important when liver enzymes are elevated or after potential exposure.

Hepatitis C – Anti-HCV

A screening test for antibodies against the hepatitis C virus. Used when infection is suspected, after medical procedures, blood transfusion, or in cases of unexplained liver-related symptoms. A positive result requires additional confirmation (PCR).

Hepatitis E – Anti-HEV

A marker for infection with the hepatitis E virus. More common after travel or consumption of contaminated food or water. Recommended when symptoms resemble hepatitis A or when liver enzymes are elevated.

When is this panel recommended?

  • symptoms of acute hepatitis

  • after potential exposure to infected blood or bodily fluids

  • elevated liver enzymes (ALT, AST)

  • before hospitalization or surgical procedures

  • unexplained fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite

  • travel to regions with increased risk
